Bonemass Preparation Guide: Poison, Iron, and Arena Control
Bonemass punishes weak preparation long before the summon. Constant wet conditions, poison, adds, deep water, and iron logistics all compete for stamina. A dry route is impossible, but a controlled route and purpose-built loadout are not.
Solve Swamp logistics before boss logistics
A Bonemass attempt begins with reliable iron extraction. Mark each Sunken Crypt, clear a route to the coast, and consolidate scrap iron in a guarded chest before sailing. Because metal cannot use a normal portal, the ship route and spare boat materials matter as much as the crypt portal. Do not strand the only pickaxe behind a death marker.
Use the first iron on progression multipliers. A strong blunt weapon directly serves the fight, while the iron pickaxe, key station improvements, longship access, and selected armor upgrades improve repeated trips. Fully upgrading every piece can create hours of hauling without fixing a weak food or recovery plan.
Build a poison and food reserve
Poison resistance should be active before the poison cloud lands, not consumed after the health bar starts collapsing. Brew enough for the main attempt and at least one recovery trip. Store a second stack away from the arena. The same reserve rule applies to sausages, turnip stew, and other current-tier meals.
A balanced loadout usually works better than three foods leaning toward the same stat. Health supports stagger capacity and mistakes; stamina supports repositioning, blocking recovery, and add control. Choose the mix for the actual weapon plan, then use the planner to compare totals rather than copying a universal “best” list.
Engineer the ground, not the boss
Walk the altar perimeter and use a hoe to raise or level deep patches. The goal is not a perfect platform; it is a connected loop where rolling, walking, and corpse retrieval do not become swimming. Clear draugr spawners, leeches near the edge, and any abomination that could join at the worst moment.
Build the portal in a protected elevated structure or adjacent safer biome, not against the altar skull. Add a workbench, chest, and a minimal roof so the return point remains useful in rain and darkness. Mark a second land route in case the direct approach fills with enemies.
Fight in controlled cycles
Bonemass telegraphs its close attacks and poison release. Stay ready to move through the dangerous animation, then return for a short blunt-damage window. Do not spend the whole stamina bar on a combo. A safe cycle preserves movement for the next cloud or add wave and uses healing only after creating space.
Clear blobs and skeletons promptly so small hits do not interrupt the main rhythm. If poison resistance, Rested, or food duration is nearly gone, leave through the prepared route and reset. Bonemass health is less important than preserving control of the arena and recovery supplies.
Prepare for silver before celebrating
The Wishbone opens reliable silver discovery in the Mountains, but entering without frost resistance and an iron pickaxe wastes the reward. Restock mead, repair the iron kit, identify a large Mountain, and plan how non-portal silver will descend. The cleanest progression step is a prepared scouting trip, not an immediate blind climb.
Before you leave
Expedition checklist
- Poison resistance covers the fight and a separate corpse-recovery trip.
- A repaired upgraded blunt weapon is the primary damage plan.
- Three current-tier foods have replacements waiting at the main base.
- The altar loop is raised or flattened above the worst water.
- Nearby spawners, leeches, and large roaming enemies are cleared.
- The portal is sheltered outside the combat radius with a recovery chest.
