Crafting and deploying siege engines

Fortress outer walls and reinforced gates cannot be penetrated with standard black metal or mistlands weaponry; standard attacks deal less than 1% damage due to heavy structural armor. Players must deploy either the Catapult or the Battering Ram crafted with Ashwood and bronze or iron hardware.

The Battering Ram is the fastest and most fuel-efficient method for breaching ground-level gates. It requires two players to operate at maximum cadence: one steering into the gate and one activating the drive lever. For solo players, the Catapult placed 25 to 30 meters back from the wall provides safe siege bomb delivery using explosive Gravensten cluster shot or fiery volcanic bombs.

  • Standard melee and bows bounce off Gravensten fortress gates.
  • Battering Ram breaches gates in 5 to 7 coordinated strikes.
  • Catapult shells clear rooftop marksmen while weakening wall battlements.
  • Protect siege engines from roaming Morgen and Fallen Valkyrie attacks during assembly.

Breach tactics and target prioritization

The instant a gate collapses, the fortress garrison activates. The interior courtyard contains two distinct threats: floating Charred Warlocks that summon flame waves and cast area-of-effect barriers, and continuous green-glowing Bone Piles that spawn fresh Charred Warriors every 12 seconds.

Never bottleneck at the doorway trying to fight foot soldiers. Charge straight past the front line with a Frostner, Mistwalker, or Staff of the Wild to obliterate the Bone Piles first. Once spawn generation ceases, focus ranged burst damage on the Warlocks before cleaning up standard melee enemies.

Securing the inner vault and Bell Fragments

At the summit of the fortress keep sits a locked vault chamber secured with an ancient runic seal. Clear all exterior marksmen from the parapets, then use the hoe and Gravensten blocks to construct temporary stairs leading directly to the central rooftop keep.

The chest inside contains guaranteed Flametal ore, Molten Cores, and 1 of the 3 ancient Bell Fragments required to summon the Ashlands biome boss. Once cleared, place a workbench or campfire inside the central courtyard to permanently suppress fortress respawns, transforming the bastion into a secure, fortified forward operations base.

  • Destroy Bone Piles within the first 30 seconds of entry.
  • Use frost damage weapons to exploit Charred elemental weaknesses.
  • Loot the rooftop vault for Bell Fragments and Molten Cores.
  • Place workbenches in each corner to permanently prevent enemy respawning.

Converting the fortress into a fortified forward base

The Gravensten walls of a cleared fortress provide near-impenetrable defense against wandering Ashlands wildlife. Repair the breached gate with Gravensten masonry or seal it with an iron gate to create a secure sanctuary.

Install a Shield Generator inside the inner courtyard to protect portals and smelters from falling cinder rain. Because Gravensten blocks withstand ambient lava heat and Morgen claw attacks, a conquered fortress serves as the ideal staging camp for smelting Flametal and launching your assault on the biome boss.
