Ashlands Agriculture: Vineberry, Smoke Puff, and Charred Soil Rules

Ashlands agriculture in patch 0.221.12 breaks several earlier farming habits: crops grow only in boiling ash soil, ambient heat destroys ordinary wood enclosures, and roaming Charred spawns trample unfortified farm beds. This guide isolates verified planting spacing, shield generator ranges, and harvest cycles without relying on unverified rumors.

Ashlands soil requirements and crop limits

In patch 0.221.12, Vineberry clusters and Smoke Puff spores will only mature when planted in cultivated Ashlands soil. If planted in the Plains or Meadows, the sprout enters an immediate Stunted state and withers within two game minutes. This biome restriction prevents players from farming end-tier food ingredients in safe starter meadows.

Cultivating soil in the Ashlands requires a Black Metal Cultivator. Regular copper or bronze cultivators do not have sufficient durability and cannot interact with dense, hardened volcanic ash ground. Verify your cultivator level and keep a repair portal immediately adjacent to the farm perimeter.

  • Vineberry and Smoke Puff grow exclusively in the Ashlands biome.
  • Requires Black Metal Cultivator on volcanic ash ground.
  • Ordinary crops (barley, flax, carrots, turnips) burn instantly in Ashlands soil.
  • Seeds require 4000 to 5000 seconds (approximately 66 to 83 in-game minutes) to reach full harvest maturity.

Crop spacing, vertical climbing, and lava buffers

Smoke Puffs behave similarly to traditional crops, requiring approximately 1.5 meters of clearance in all horizontal directions. Sowing them too tightly turns the crop brown and stunted. Sowing in a 2x2 grid per 4-meter stone floor footprint maximizes yield while avoiding crowding penalties.

Vineberry clusters require vertical support. In patch 0.221.12, vines must be planted within 1.0 meter of a vertical stone or Gravensten wall. If planted on open flat ash with no vertical boundary within range, the vine produces only 33% of its standard cluster yield.

Lava rocks and boiling slag ground emit a permanent radiant heat aura extending 2.0 meters. Any seedling planted within this 2-meter proximity will ignite and incinerate immediately upon planting. Use the hoe to level the ground and bury hot cinder pockets before cultivating.

Perimeter defense and Shield Generator placement

Ordinary wooden stakes and stone walls are rapidly breached by Charred Warriors, Asksvin, and Morgen attacks. The minimum viable farm enclosure uses Gravensten masonry at least 4 meters high (two full Gravensten blocks tall) with an overhang lip to block jumping Asksvin.

Volcanic cinder storms and falling fire meteors deal continuous blunt and fire damage to exposed crops. Place a Shield Generator loaded with Bone Fragments or Charred Bones to envelope the entire planting bed. The generator bubble absorbs fire projectiles and prevents falling embers from scorching the fragile sprouts.

  • Construct Gravensten walls with inward overhanging lips.
  • Shield Generator must cover 100% of the crop canopy.
  • Keep bone fuel reserves stocked to maintain shield power through storms.
  • Suppress spawns within 30 meters using workbenches or campfires hidden under stone floors.

Harvest cycles and replanting math

Every mature Vineberry cluster yields 2 to 3 berries and 1 to 2 vine cuttings. Maintaining agricultural continuity requires saving at least 50% of your cutting yield for the next replanting cycle. Consuming all berries into Mead or Ashlands feasts without preserving cuttings forces another dangerous foray into wild ruins.

Smoke Puffs yield 1 mushroom and 2 to 3 spores. This favorable spore ratio allows rapid multiplication: a starting cache of 5 spores expands into a full 40-crop field in just three harvest cycles. Store emergency seed reserves in a sealed iron chest inside a portal-linked secondary base.

Before you leave

Expedition checklist

  • Cultivated soil is strictly within the Ashlands biome boundary.
  • Black Metal Cultivator is repaired and equipped.
  • Ground is leveled with hoe to extinguish hot cinder pockets.
  • All crops maintain a minimum 2-meter clearance from molten lava.
  • Gravensten or Black Marble walls enclose the entire farm plot.
  • Shield Generator is fueled with bones and covers the crop area.
  • At least 50% of seed cuttings are reserved in a secure iron chest.
