Flametal Smelting and Molten Core Fuel Logistics in Patch 0.221.12

Refining raw Flametal ore into usable metal bars requires specialized fueling logistics introduced in the Ashlands update. In patch 0.221.12, Molten Cores extracted from Charred Fortresses and Surtling geysers serve as high-output catalysts for advanced metallurgical refinement. This guide covers fuel efficiency ratios, blast furnace placement safety, and smelting priorities for solo and multiplayer camps.

Blast furnace structural prerequisites and heat requirements

Attempting to feed raw Flametal ore into a standard Black Forest or Plains smelter produces no reaction; the interface will reject the volcanic ore. You must construct an upgraded Blast Furnace, which requires an Artisan Table, 20 Stone, 5 Surtling Cores, 10 Iron, and 2 Molten Cores recovered from Charred Fortress vaults.

Position the Blast Furnace under a high Gravensten ceiling. Standard wood and darkwood roofs will take passive fire damage if exposed to chimney smoke exhaust in hot biomes. Ensure the surrounding floor is solid stone or raised earth to withstand incidental cinder damage.

  • Requires an Artisan Table nearby to unlock the construction recipe.
  • Consumes 2 Molten Cores as permanent structural catalysts during assembly.
  • Cannot be placed on wooden support beams due to severe fire hazard.
  • Must be shielded by a Shield Generator to repel ambient volcanic embers.

Fuel consumption and throughput ratios

The smelting cycle in patch 0.221.12 consumes 2 Coal units for every 1 raw Flametal ore processed. A fully loaded blast furnace holds up to 20 raw ore and 40 Coal, running continuously for 10 minutes to produce 20 refined Flametal bars.

Because Coal consumption is heavy when refining large mining hauls, establish a dedicated Surtling core farm in the Swamps or set up continuous Ashwood charcoal kilns adjacent to your smelting foundry. Ashwood yields twice the charcoal output of standard wood per kiln burn cycle.

Foundry defense and fire suppression

Flametal foundries generate immense acoustic and light attraction, drawing roaming Morgen, Fallen Valkyries, and Charred patrols from hundreds of meters away. Smelting operations in the Ashlands must never be conducted in an open-air enclosure.

Construct Gravensten defensive perimeter walls around the loading bays and fuel stockpiles. Position ballistas loaded with mechanical wooden bolts near the primary air intake to intercept airborne Valkyries before their fire strikes ignite Coal hoppers.

  • Double-wall foundry loading docks with Gravensten blocks.
  • Install automated ballistas set to target flying Ashlands predators.
  • Keep backup fire-resistance barley wine near the furnace fuel intake.
  • Route chimney exhausts outside the Shield Generator protective bubble.

High-priority Flametal crafting order

Once your initial batch of refined Flametal is poured, prioritize equipment upgrades that directly boost expedition survival. The Flametal Shield and Berserkir Axes provide immediate defensive parry and offensive clearing power against Charred raiding parties.

Reserve at least 15 refined bars for crafting the Ashlands siege engines (Battering Ram and Catapult), which are essential for cracking subsequent fortresses to replenish your Molten Core stockpiles.

Before you leave

Expedition checklist

  • Artisan Table active and within building radius.
  • 2 Molten Cores secured from Charred Fortress vaults or Surtling geysers.
  • Smelting facility reinforced with non-combustible Gravensten masonry.
  • Dedicated Ashwood charcoal supply established (2 Coal per Flametal ore).
  • Shield Generator active and powered with bone fragments.
  • Defensive ballistas deployed against incoming Fallen Valkyries.
